Illinois GOP office vandalized with Nazi symbols by elderly suspects
The chair of the Illinois Republican Party, Kathy Salvi, has condemned a recent act of vandalism at a suburban GOP office. Two elderly suspects were arrested after allegedly defacing the property with Nazi symbols, offensive language, and a substance believed to be faeces.
Salvi linked the attack to rising political tensions and called for a return to civil discourse.
The incident involved two individuals, aged in their late 60s and early 70s, who were later charged by authorities. Salvi criticised the escalation of extreme political rhetoric, warning that inflammatory comparisons—such as likening immigration agencies to the Gestapo—can provoke destructive behaviour.
She spoke from personal experience, recalling threats and harassment during her 2022 campaign for U.S. Senate. While acknowledging the seriousness of the vandalism, she rejected the notion that political violence is limited to any specific age group. Salvi praised law enforcement for their swift action and expressed confidence that the suspects would face consequences. Despite the incident, she affirmed that Republicans would continue to voice their policies and engage in public debate.
No additional security measures by Illinois state police have been announced in response to the attack. Meanwhile, the state and city of Chicago have pursued legal action against federal immigration operations and National Guard deployments.
Salvi reiterated her call for respectful political engagement, stressing the need to move beyond hostility and division.
