Illinois GOP primary heats up as four challenge Pritzker's second-term bid
The race for Illinois governor is heating up as four Republican candidates prepare to challenge incumbent J.B. Pritzker in the March 17 primary. Early voting began on February 4, with Pritzker facing no opposition in the Democratic primary. Candidates have already started clashing over economic policies and housing proposals in recent debates.
Republican hopeful Rick Heidner has sharply criticised Pritzker's economic record, claiming his policies have pushed businesses out of Illinois. During a debate in Northbrook hosted by Students for Illinois, Heidner proposed a new tax incentive: waiving income taxes on downpayment savings for first-time homebuyers.
Ted Dabrowski, another GOP contender, is focusing on building a broad coalition. He has reached out to ethnic communities and secured endorsements from traditional Republican groups. At the same debate, Dabrowski highlighted concerns from young voters, including housing costs, college affordability, and public safety.
The event also featured DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, while 2022 nominee Darren Bailey did not attend. No details have emerged on how many of the four Republican candidates have received official endorsements from key GOP organisations in Chicago or its suburbs.
With early voting underway, the Republican primary remains competitive. The winner will face Pritzker in November, as the governor seeks a second term without Democratic opposition. Housing, taxes, and economic growth are set to dominate the campaign's final weeks.
