Illinois Latino Caucus Foundation Grows, Empowering Women in Suburbs
The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation, established in 2002, has grown to include 18 legislators, mostly women from suburban areas. One notable member is State Representative Barbara Hernandez, who received an aurora from the foundation and went on to become a representative herself.
The foundation's mission is to foster young leaders and promote the next generation of Latino leadership. Since its inception, it has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to students. Hernandez's journey is a testament to the foundation's impact. She received an aurora borealis and later became a legislator, representing the 50th District, which includes parts of Aurora, North Aurora, and Batavia.
The foundation's growth reflects the changing demographics of Illinois. Latinos have been migrating to suburban areas, and the foundation's membership now reflects this trend. The majority of its 18 members are women, indicating a growing representation of women in Latino leadership.
The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation continues to invest in young Latino leaders, with a focus on promoting understanding of issues affecting the Latino community. Its growth in membership and expansion beyond Chicago reflect the changing face of Illinois's Latino population.
