The Return of the Flugplatzfest Backnang-Heiningen: A Celebration of Aviation and Community

After a twelve-year hiatus, the Flugplatzfest Backnang-Heiningen is set to return this August, marking an exciting revival of a significant event that combines aviation, music, and local culture.

A Tragic Pause and a Steady Recovery

The event's suspension followed a tragic accident at the 2012 airshow, which claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl and three others. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) concluded that the Robin entered the wake turbulence of an Antonov 2, which had taken off just before. The incident led to the suspension of the Flugplatzfest, but the spirit of aviation in Heiningen remained alive.

During the suspension period, the Luftsportverein Backnang-Heiningen hosted the "Oldtimer Meets Flugplatz" event as a quieter alternative. Last year, the club revived the tradition of the classic Flugplatzfest.

A Warm Welcome Back

This year, the Flugplatzfest will take place at the airport of the Luftsportverein Backnang-Heiningen on August 23rd and 24th. The event will feature motor and glider aerobatic shows, flights for visitors, and performances by Uwe Schreyer with a Pitts S2-B biplane and Volker Fischer with a Yak-52.

Visitors can also look forward to the elegance of gliders demonstrated by Christian Hartmann. In addition, Eberhard Gienger, a former Bundestag member and long-time gymnast, will skydive over the airport on Saturday.

An Accessible and Enjoyable Experience

The event will be free for all, with food and drinks available on-site. There will be a playground for children, and free parking is provided. The festival starts at 12 pm both days, running until 9 pm on Saturday and 7 pm on Sunday.

A Celebration of Aviation and Community

The Flugplatzfest Backnang-Heiningen is more than just an airshow; it's a celebration of aviation, music, and community spirit. As the event returns, it offers a unique opportunity to explore its history, performers, and schedule. For specific details, consult official event sources or local news outlets. Get ready to soar into an exciting weekend of aviation, music, and camaraderie!
