Dengue Outbreak Continues to Intensify in Bangladesh

The latest data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reveals a concerning increase in dengue cases across various divisions of Bangladesh. In the last 24 hours (9 August), a total of 332 patients were hospitalized due to dengue, with 49 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), 33 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), 66 in Barishal division, 54 in Chattogram, 14 in Khulna, 6 in Mymensingh, and 41 in Rajshahi division.

Regrettably, 3 lives have been claimed by the disease in the same period. This brings the total number of deaths from dengue in 2023 to 98. The total number of dengue infections this year has risen to 23,735.

Last year, Bangladesh reported a total of 1,01,214 dengue cases and a tragic death toll of 575. The current data does not provide an updated figure for this year's death toll.

The escalating dengue outbreak in Bangladesh has been attributed to a combination of climatic conditions, changing viral strains, vaccine challenges, and gaps in public health control measures. The trend shows a significant increase from 2020 and 2021 to 2023, with the 2023 outbreak being the worst in Bangladesh's history, recording 321,179 cases and 1,705 deaths.

In the past, Bangladesh experienced a major outbreak in 2019 with 101,354 cases and 179 deaths. The 2023 outbreak has approximately three times the number of cases and almost ten times the number of deaths compared to 2019.
