Inauguration of the Freedom and Unity Monument
Berlin’s long-awaited Freedom and Unity Monument, nicknamed the Unity Seesaw, is set to open in 2027. The interactive artwork will stand in front of the Humboldt Forum, honouring the peaceful revolution of 1989 and Germany’s reunification. Originally planned for 2022, the project faced delays before a new timeline was confirmed.
The monument takes the form of a giant walk-on seesaw, designed to hold hundreds of people at once. When visitors move in sync, their combined weight creates a gentle rocking motion. This collaborative effect symbolises the collective effort behind Germany’s reunification.
Artist **Pia Frühsorge** was announced as the project’s lead in **July 2025**, working alongside renowned choreographer **Sasha Waltz**, who contributed to the design concept. The inauguration was initially scheduled for **German Unity Day in 2022**, but construction setbacks forced a postponement. A new date has yet to be set, though organisers have confirmed the event will be free to attend. Further details about the opening festivities remain under wraps. The monument’s playful yet meaningful design aims to engage visitors while reflecting the spirit of unity that defined 1989.
The Unity Seesaw will offer a hands-on way to experience history. Its location in central Berlin ensures high visibility, while the interactive design encourages public participation. Once inaugurated, the monument will serve as both a tribute and a gathering place for future generations.
