India and Israel forge defence alliance to co-produce advanced weapons

India and Israel are deepening defence ties as part of New Delhi’s push for local manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. The partnership aims to co-produce advanced weapon systems, with Israel offering technology transfers in critical areas like AI, cyber defence, and military training. This move also signals a strategic shift, as Israel seeks reliable production partners amid regional tensions.

Under the new agreement, both countries have signed a memorandum to jointly develop and manufacture defence platforms. Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) will begin local production of 40,000 Negev light machine guns (LMGs) for the Indian army by 2026. Meanwhile, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has already established a joint venture with France’s Safran for the Hammer air-to-ground weapon, demonstrating India’s growing role in high-tech defence production.

The deal strengthens India’s defence manufacturing base while giving Israel a trusted production hub. With joint projects already underway and more in the pipeline, the focus remains on building self-reliance in advanced weapon systems. The long-term impact will depend on how quickly technology transfers and local production ramp up in the coming years.
