India-Canada Tensions Rise Over Trudeau's Stance on Separatist Movements

Tensions have arisen between India and Canada, with the Ministry of External Affairs of India pointing the finger at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for straining their diplomatic relations. However, the Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, has a differing view on the matter.

The Indian government has linked past political positions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to potential damage in India-Canada relations, particularly in regards to separatist movements like Sikh independence. Meanwhile, no specific Canadian politicians have been identified as significantly harming bilateral relations, according to available sources.

Trudeau recently admitted that his government shared intelligence with India about the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, but no concrete evidence was provided. Former Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma had previously accused Trudeau of relying on intelligence rather than evidence in blaming India for the murder. However, Patnaik, the current High Commissioner, disputes this view, stating that no single individual can ruin the India-Canada relationship.

Despite differing opinions on the impact of political figures, Patnaik highlights shared democratic values, freedom of press, rule of law, and economic openness as strong bonds between India and Canada. The future of their diplomatic ties remains uncertain, but both countries continue to engage in dialogue and cooperation.
