'India is the place to build': Ronnie Screwvala says Indians need not replicate Western, Chinese models
Entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala recently addressed students at Presidency University, urging them to focus on solving India’s real challenges. Speaking under the leadership of Chancellor Dr Nissar Ahmed, he shared insights from his own journey while encouraging young minds to build meaningful careers in the country.
Screwvala began by highlighting his rise from a lower middle-class background to building a successful business empire. He admitted facing scepticism from his own family when choosing entrepreneurship but stressed the importance of staying resolute despite doubts.
He advised students to avoid chasing quick funding or high valuations. Instead, he urged them to tackle problems that truly matter for India’s sustainable growth. For lasting impact, he recommended aiming to be among the top 20-30% in their fields, as this would open greater opportunities. The entrepreneur also cautioned against relying too heavily on AI or social media for self-definition. He encouraged resilience in uncertain times and reminded students that success often comes from unexpected detours. Additionally, he praised Presidency University’s multidisciplinary approach under Dr Ahmed’s leadership, calling it a strong foundation for future leaders. Screwvala concluded by stressing that India must carve its own development path—one that bridges rural and urban ambitions—rather than copying Western or Chinese models.
The session left students with a clear message: India offers vast potential for those willing to address its unique challenges. Screwvala’s emphasis on problem-solving, self-reliance, and perseverance set a practical tone for young professionals aiming to make a difference.
