India Offers Afghan Scholarships Amidst Domestic Criticism
India has taken steps to strengthen its relationship with Afghanistan, offering educational scholarships to Afghan students. This move comes amidst criticism from PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who has slammed the BJP-led central government for its policies towards Indian Muslims and its stance on Afghanistan.
Mehbooba Mufti, in an interview with Kashmir In Focus on October 12, 2025, expressed her disapproval of the government's embrace of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan while allegedly marginalizing Indian Muslims. She accused the BJP of demonizing Muslims with terms like 'Love Jihad', 'Land Jihad', 'Vote Jihad', and 'Cow Jihad'.
Mufti further charged that the BJP's withdrawal of scholarships for Muslim students and closure of madrasas in India is a sign of internal hypocrisy. She criticized the government for targeting Indian Muslims while simultaneously engaging with the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Mufti emphasized the importance of fostering trust, respect, and equality within India's borders, particularly with its minority Muslim community.
While India extends a hand of cooperation to Afghanistan, the government faces criticism at home. Mehbooba Mufti's accusations highlight the need for the BJP-led government to address the concerns of Indian Muslims and ensure equality and justice for all citizens.
