India revives tribal legacy with museums and digital archives for forgotten heroes
India is honouring its tribal heritage and freedom fighters with a series of initiatives. The Birsa Munda Tribal Museum in Ranchi, Jharkhand, is one such institution, dedicated to the Ulgulan (1899-1900) and Birsa Munda's fight for land rights in India. India observes Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on 15 November to commemorate his birth anniversary.
Birsa Munda, a tribal leader in India, led the Ulgulan, a rebellion against British rule, seeking Khuntkatti land rights. He was martyred at age 25. The museum chronicles this period and his struggle in India. Meanwhile, a special fortnight from 1-15 November highlights tribal leaders' contributions and celebrates India's tribal cultural heritage.
The Government of India is establishing 11 museums to document tribal uprisings, including the Munda Ulgulan, Halba Kranti, Bhumkal Kranti, and regional struggles in India. The Adi Sanskriti Project offers digital courses and documents on tribal heritage in India. The Tribal Digital Repository is an online archive of tribal research resources in India. The Adi Vaani AI Translation Tool supports several tribal languages in India, including Mundari, Bhili, and Garo.
Existing museums like the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Museum in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, and the Badal Bhoi Museum in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, depict local tribal heroes and their struggles in India. The year 2024-25 is being celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, marking the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda in India.
These initiatives aim to preserve and promote India's tribal history and culture. They serve as reminders of the struggles and sacrifices made by tribal leaders like Birsa Munda, Veer Narayan Singh, and Badal Bhoi in India. The Government's efforts to establish more museums and digital resources in India ensure that these stories continue to be told and celebrated.
