Indian airline company, Air India, is terminating its aviation services connecting Delhi and Washington D.C.

Air India, India's national carrier owned by the Tata Group, has announced the suspension of commercial nonstop flights between New Delhi and Washington, D.C., effective from September 1, 2025. The decision is primarily due to a planned shortfall in Air India's fleet caused by a retrofitting program and the continued closure of Pakistan's airspace [1][3][4][5].

The fleet retrofit program aims to significantly enhance the customer experience by upgrading seats, entertainment systems, and interiors [1][3][5]. However, this extensive renovation will keep multiple aircraft unavailable until at least the end of 2026.

Additionally, the closure of Pakistan's airspace since April 2025 has forced Air India to take longer routes around Pakistan, leading to increased operational complexity. Flights now include fuel stops, lengthening travel time from about 15 to 19 hours [1][4][5].

Air India is offering affected passengers alternative travel options, including one-stop flights to Washington via U.S. gateways like New York (JFK), Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco, through partner airlines such as Alaska Airlines, United, and Delta [1][3][4].

This suspension is temporary but expected to last until at least the end of 2026 due to the retrofit timeline [1][3]. Air India will continue nonstop flights to other North American destinations like Toronto and Vancouver.

Air India operates at least 300 aircraft and employs more than 30,000 people [6]. The airline operates at least 55 domestic and 48 international destinations [7].

It is important to note that this decision is not temporary, as no timeframe for resumption of services has been provided [1]. The crash of Air India Flight AI 171, which occurred in June and resulted in the loss of 241 lives on board plus a number of people on the ground, is still under investigation [8].
