Indian Vlogger Detained 15 Hours in China After Supporting Fellow Traveler

An Indian travel vlogger faced a 15-hour detention by Chinese authorities in November 2022 after expressing concern for another Indian traveller from Arunachal Pradesh. The incident has raised questions about the treatment of Indian passport holders in China, particularly those from disputed regions.

The vlogger, Mittal, described the experience as deeply distressing but maintains his commitment to promoting cultural exchange through his work.

The ordeal began on November 16, when Mittal was questioned extensively by Chinese officials before being released. He later shared that his detention followed a public statement supporting Prema, another Indian from Arunachal Pradesh, who had endured an 18-hour ordeal at Shanghai airport a month earlier. Prema had been transiting to Japan when Chinese authorities challenged her Indian passport, insisting Arunachal Pradesh was part of China.

Mittal recalled feeling powerless during his detention, stating, 'Humaari koi aukaat nahi' (We have no standing). Despite the trauma, he emphasised that his work as a travel vlogger remains focused on storytelling and cultural connection, not politics. He has no political ties and continues to advocate for peace and understanding through travel.

Prema’s earlier experience involved allegations of harassment and verbal abuse by Chinese officials during her transit. Both cases highlight ongoing tensions over India’s northeastern state, which China claims as part of its territory.

Mittal’s detention and Prema’s earlier ordeal underscore the challenges faced by travellers from Arunachal Pradesh in China. The incidents have drawn attention to diplomatic sensitivities, though Mittal has reiterated his non-political stance. His focus remains on sharing travel experiences and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.
