India’s Army Chief Visits Sikkim Amid Border Stability Efforts with China
General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, arrived in Sikkim on Tuesday for a two-day official visit. His trip comes as India and China continue efforts to stabilize relations along their shared border, including the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor.
The Siliguri Corridor, often called the 'Chicken’s Neck,' is a narrow stretch of land that connects northeast India to the rest of the country. Its geopolitical significance is immense, as any disruption could sever critical supply routes. The officer overseeing its defense holds the position of General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Eastern Command.
General Dwivedi’s visit underscores the importance of maintaining strong defensive readiness in Sikkim. The region’s strategic value, combined with ongoing diplomatic and military communication, remains central to India's border management.
