India's Jal Jeevan Mission brings clean water to 81.7% of rural homes

India's Jal Jeevan Mission has transformed rural access to clean drinking water since its launch in 2019. Over 15 crore households—around 81.7% of the rural population—now have functioning tap connections. President Droupadi Murmu recently highlighted the mission's impact at the 'Jal Mahotsav 2026', calling for greater water conservation efforts across the country.

Before the mission, many villagers, particularly women and children, spent hours walking long distances to fetch drinking water. The Jal Jeevan Mission was introduced to address this challenge by providing safe, piped water directly to homes.

The initiative has not only improved water access but also encouraged community involvement. Local **Self-Help Groups (SHGs)** now assist in water testing, system maintenance, and awareness campaigns. Greywater management has also been integrated with the **Clean India Mission** to promote sustainable water use in rural areas. President Murmu stressed that water holds deep cultural, economic, and social significance in India. She urged a **coordinated approach** to strengthen water security, predicting that **'Jal Mahotsav'** could grow into a nationwide movement for conservation.

The mission's progress means millions no longer face daily struggles for clean water. With continued community engagement and government support, the push for water security is set to expand. The focus now shifts to maintaining systems, managing resources efficiently, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
