India’s Navy Day Honors 1971’s Bold Karachi Strike That Changed History
Every year on December 4, India celebrates Navy Day to honour its maritime forces. The date marks a defining moment in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, when the Indian Navy launched a daring attack on Karachi port. This operation crippled Pakistan’s naval strength and reshaped the course of the conflict.
The Indian Navy struck first with Operation Trident on the nights of December 4 and 5, 1971. The assault came in response to Pakistan’s air raids on Indian airfields the previous day. Five missile boats—INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, INS Veer, and others—targeted Karachi, Pakistan’s key naval base.
The 1971 operations weakened Pakistan’s naval capabilities and forced a strategic retreat. India’s victory in the war led to the creation of Bangladesh. Today, Navy Day serves as a reminder of the Indian Navy’s role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders and honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
