India’s Rights Body Probes US Group Over Alleged Anti-Muslim Narratives and Foreign Funding
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has initiated an investigation into the activities of the US-based Indian-American Muslim Council (IAMC). The probe follows a complaint alleging that the organisation is portraying Indian Muslims in a negative light and violating Indian laws through illicit foreign funding.
Javed Malik, national convenor of Akhil Bhartiya Pasmanda Muslim Manch, filed the complaint. He accused IAMC's HRRF Journalism Grant 2025 of promoting a distorted narrative of Indian Muslims. Malik claimed that the organisation's activities damage the dignity and public image of Indian Muslims, foster communal distrust, and isolate marginalised groups within the community.
The NHRC has taken cognisance of the complaint and issued a notice to the Ministry of External Affairs. It has directed the ministry to conduct a prompt probe into the matter and submit an Action Taken Report within 10 days.
The NHRC's investigation into IAMC's activities is ongoing. The organisation is accused of misrepresenting Indian Muslims and influencing media through illicit foreign funding. The ministry has been directed to complete the probe and submit a report within the given deadline.
