Boeing 787 Calamities: India Orders Ramped-Up Scrutiny on Dreamliners

Indirectly mandates enhanced monitoring of all Boeing 787 Dreamliners in Indian airspace.

Indian aviation authorities have heightened surveillance on all Boeing 787 aircraft following two separate incidents, creating a commotion around the crucial commercial product.

The crash of flight AI171, marking the first fatal incident of a Boeing 787, sent shockwaves across the aviation industry. Registering at least 271 fatalities, a second Dreamliner of Air India aborted its flight just days later due to technical issues. This revelation was shared by the Indian news agency ANI, citing informed sources.

The flight, AI315, took off at around 12:20 local time and climbed to about 6.7 kilometers before rapidly descending. Technical issues were suspected by the pilot, causing the aircraft to return to Hong Kong for an immediate inspection. Reportedly, the affected aircraft is approximately 7 years old.

A Closer Look: The Crash’s AftermathOver the ensuing week, the cause of the calamity remains shrouded in mystery. Initial findings suggest power problems with the GEnx engines, as the pilot emitted a Mayday call signaling engine issues before the disaster. Questions continue to swirl around possible factors such as pilot error, misconfigured flaps, dual engine failure, or electrical malfunctions, but official clarification is still pending the completion of the investigation.

Investigations Intensify: The Recovery of Black BoxesRecovery teams in Ahmedabad have now recovered both flight recorders, key components instrumental in unveiling the intricacies behind the disaster. The voice recorder was retrieved from the crash site, while the flight data recorder was recovered on Friday. The voice recorder documents conversations in the cockpit, while both devices are colloquially known as "black boxes". They are expected to clarify factors like why the landing gear was not retracted, and whether the landing flaps were properly positioned at takeoff.

As the search for answers continues, the industry watches closely, with Boeing's recent safety concerns rearing their head once more. The Indian Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, has dedicated high-priority attention to the inspection of the remaining Dreamliners in operation. In total, there are 34 787-8s in service with Indian airlines, eight of which have already been examined post the disaster.
