A new documentary, 'High Stakes: Soldiers in Kosovo', offers a glimpse into the lives of German soldiers serving abroad. Airing on ZDF on Tuesday, November 18, at 10:15 PM, the film follows two soldiers: Alina, a young officer on her first overseas deployment, and Peter, a veteran with multiple foreign deployments. Alina, a platoon leader in the Gebirgsjäger (mountain infantry), faces unique challenges as an officer in a traditionally patriarchal army. Responsible for 34 soldiers, she must assert her authority while navigating the expectations of a male-dominated environment.

Peter, a trainer, teaches young soldiers weapon handling and conduct. With multiple deployments under his belt, he shares his experiences managing the long absences from home and the personal strains that come with it. The documentary explores these professional challenges and personal struggles, providing an intimate look at military life overseas.
