Institutions Face Rising Threat of Coordinated Reputational Attacks

At a recent WonkComms Breakfast Club in Berlin, experts explored the rising threat of coordinated reputational attacks on institutions. Dr. Isabelle Werenfels, a researcher on North Africa, faced a months-long smear campaign from Moroccan media, highlighting the severity of the issue. The event underscored the need for institutions to prepare and respond effectively to such attacks.

Dr. Gabriele Freitag shared how the German Association for East European Studies has faced legal, reputational, and digital threats from Russia. Even partner states can initiate aggressive disinformation campaigns, increasing risks for institutions. Nina Ohlmeier suggested that foundations should develop structures for proactive political positioning and rapid response. Wiebke Ewering emphasized the importance of crisis communication as a core institutional function, not an ad hoc response.

Solidarity from external networks can help institutions and individuals counter disinformation and protect credibility. However, internal attacks can be harder to navigate, requiring tailored response plans and internal support mechanisms.

Experts agreed that a strong and transparent response to attacks can reinforce credibility and build long-term public trust. Preparation, such as clear internal protocols and designated spokespersons, creates resilience against reputational attacks. Institutions must be ready to face these challenges, as even partner states can pose risks. The discussion underscored the importance of robust communication strategies in an era of increasing disinformation.
