News Article: S7 Airlines Incident at Norilsk Airport

Investigation Kicks Off by Transport Prosecutor's Office Following S7 Aircraft Incident

On Tuesday, an Airbus A321 operated by S7 Airlines experienced a malfunction in its hydraulic system during a flight from Novosibirsk to Norilsk. The aircraft, carrying 152 passengers including 14 children, landed safely at Norilsk Airport.

This incident follows a series of events involving S7 Airlines and other Russian airlines. A flight from Novosibirsk to Antalya was delayed by a day in August 2021 due to an emergency braking incident. In July 2023, an S7 Airlines Airbus A321 experienced a runway overshoot while landing at a regional airport in Russia during adverse weather.

Airbus A321 specific issues have been a concern, with several non-fatal incidents linked to autopilot anomalies, sudden speed fluctuations, and hydraulic system warnings. Aviation authorities have mandated routine technical inspections emphasizing hydraulic and flight control systems.

The West Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office is currently investigating this incident involving an S7 Airlines aircraft. A technical inspection of the aircraft's systems is underway, and a reserve aircraft has been dispatched from Novosibirsk to Norilsk for the return flight.

Incidents involving Russian airlines over the past four years have shown a pattern where adverse weather conditions and technical malfunctions in older aircraft remain key contributors to runway overshoots and other incidents. Aviation authorities and airlines have implemented enhanced pilot training and maintenance inspections to mitigate these risks.
