IONOS and VNC Launch Germany's First Sovereign Cloud for Secure Business Communication
IONOS and VNC have teamed up to build a new sovereign cloud solution based in Germany. The partnership aims to provide secure digital communication tools for businesses and IT providers. Both companies describe the project as a long-term effort to meet growing demand for GDPR-compliant, trustworthy cloud services.
The first stage of the collaboration will focus on offering VNClagoon products through the IONOS Cloud. Customers will access these either as software-as-a-service (SaaS) or as dedicated instances tailored to specific business needs. The solution combines IONOS's platform-as-a-service (PaaS) with VNC's open-source, Kubernetes-based software stack for communication and teamwork.
All VNClagoon components are fully transparent and auditable, thanks to their open-source design. Beyond standard cloud security, the partners are also developing confidential computing technologies. These will add extra layers of protection for sensitive business data processed in the cloud.
The target users include businesses, system integrators, independent software vendors (ISVs), and IT service providers. VNC CEO Andrea Wörrlein has highlighted the urgent need for a highly secure, GDPR-compliant cloud platform in Germany. However, as of February 2026, no details have been released about specific industries or public institutions involved in early implementations.
For the cloud to be truly sovereign, security must cover the entire process chain—hardware included. The companies emphasise that this approach ensures full control over data and infrastructure.
The partnership will roll out its first services through the IONOS Cloud, with plans to expand secure cloud options over time. Businesses and IT providers will gain access to a platform designed for compliance, transparency, and advanced data protection. No public timelines or pilot projects have been confirmed yet.
