Iran at a Crossroads: Berlin Senator Warns of Risk and Opportunity After Khamenei's Death

Berlin's justice senator, Felor Badenberg, has spoken out about Iran's future following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. An Iranian native who moved to Germany at 12, she sees this moment as a potential turning point for the country—but also a time of great risk.

Badenberg believes Khamenei's death could open a path toward freedom and self-determination for Iran. She warns, however, that without careful handling, the nation might slide into chaos or see old power structures reassert control. The coming weeks and months, she argues, will be decisive.

Germany and the wider international community have already taken steps in response to Iran's political situation. Organisations like PRO ASYL and HÁWAR.help have pushed for halting deportations and granting residency to Iranian refugees. Bundestag Vice-President Omid Nouripour (Greens) has called for banning Iran's Revolutionary Guards, imposing entry bans, and shutting down diplomatic offices. Meanwhile, parliamentarians from the IGFM have adopted political sponsorships for Iranian prisoners, and Chancellor Merz has condemned the regime while stressing the need to protect civilians amid rising tensions in 2025–2026.

Badenberg insists that Germany must play an active role in supporting those fighting for human rights and democracy in Iran. She wants to ensure that any transition avoids a power vacuum or renewed violence, allowing for a stable and democratic future.

The senator's comments highlight both the opportunity and the dangers ahead for Iran. With international pressure mounting and domestic tensions high, the country's next steps will determine whether this moment leads to reform—or deeper instability.
