Isabella ‘Beya’ Alcaraz becomes San Francisco’s first Filipina American supervisor
San Francisco's District 4 has a new supervisor. Isabella 'Beya' Alcaraz was appointed by Mayor Daniel Lurie and sworn in on October 13, 2022. She replaces Joel Engardio, who was recalled in September following controversy over a Great Highway ballot measure.
Alcaraz, a 29-year-old lifelong Sunset District resident, brings a unique background to the role. She previously owned and operated The Animal Connection, a pet supply store in the district. Before her appointment, she was a music and art teacher for children and ran a small animal shop.
Her appointment was welcomed by Lucas Lux, head of Friends of Sunset Dunes. He expressed hope for her leadership in healing the neighborhood. Mayor Lurie described Alcaraz as a 'bridge builder and problem solver' who cares deeply about her community.
Alcaraz makes history as the first Filipina American to serve on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Her appointment brings fresh perspective to the city's leadership, with a focus on community engagement and problem-solving.
