J.D. Vance rises as Trump’s heir and a 2028 presidential election contender
J.D. Vance is emerging as a key figure in the future of the MAGA movement. Donald Trump recently named him the 'most likely' successor to lead the political direction he established. Meanwhile, new details have surfaced about late activist Charlie Kirk’s plans to back Vance for the 2028 presidential election.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of the influential MAGA-aligned group Turning Point, was assassinated in Utah last September. Before his death, he had openly discussed supporting J.D. Vance as a 2028 presidential election candidate. His widow, Erika Kirk, revealed that in their final conversation, her husband was determined to push Vance’s candidacy for the 2028 presidential election.
Erika Kirk has since taken over Turning Point and promised to continue her husband’s work. The organisation, however, is currently focused on the 2023 midterm elections rather than the 2028 presidential election.
Vance, a senator from Ohio, was an early favourite for Trump’s 2024 vice-presidential pick. His advocacy for Trump’s policies earned him strong backing from Charlie Kirk during the selection process. Trump has also floated the idea of a future ticket pairing Vance with Florida senator Marco Rubio, indicating Rubio as another potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
With Trump’s endorsement and the late Charlie Kirk’s strategic plans for the 2028 presidential election, Vance’s position in MAGA politics appears solidified. The movement’s long-term direction may hinge on his role, though Turning Point’s immediate efforts remain fixed on the upcoming midterms. Erika Kirk’s leadership ensures the organisation’s influence will persist in shaping conservative priorities.
