Jackson Heights Unites: Jews and Muslims Come Together This Sunday

A unique event is set to take place in Jackson Heights this Sunday, aiming to foster understanding and unity between the Jewish and Muslim communities. 'Finding shelter in each other' will bring together residents for a day of discussion, snacks, and sweets, organized by the Jackson Heights Community Center.

The event, to be held in the garden of St. Marks Episcopal Church, will feature small group discussions on Jewish and Islamic texts. Despite some community members' initial skepticism, Ali, a prominent figure in the Muslim community, believes such interfaith gatherings are crucial. Dan Fleshler, a Jewish resident, though having limited contact with his Muslim neighbors, plans to attend. He sees this event as a step towards addressing inter-religious tensions and politics in the Middle East.

The event is also supported by Malkhut, a 10-year-old organization dedicated to building a creative, progressive intergenerational Jewish community in Western Queens. Rabbi Rachel Goldenberg, Malkhut's founder, has forged a relationship with Imam Shamsi Ali, director of the Jamaica Muslim Center. Imam Ali hopes that a recent peace deal between Israel and Hamas will be truly implemented, a sentiment echoed by many attendees.

The 'Finding shelter in each other' event promises to be a significant step in bringing together the Jewish and Muslim communities of Jackson Heights. With snacks, tea, and sweets, along with meaningful discussions, it offers a chance for residents to connect, learn, and grow together.
