Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajbhavan is now Lok Bhavan after government directive

The Rajbhavan in Jammu and Kashmir has officially become Lok Bhavan. The change took place on 15 August 2023, following instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This move aligns with a broader effort to rename official residences across union territories.

The MHA directed that all Governor and Lieutenant Governor offices should be renamed. Governor residences are now called Lok Bhavan, while Lieutenant Governor residences are referred to as Lok Niwas. Ladakh had already adopted the new naming convention earlier, with its Raj Bhavan becoming Lok Niwas.

The updated names—Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas—are now in effect for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The change follows a clear directive from the central government. Officials have framed it as part of a move to emphasise accessibility and public connection.
