After Hikel Drama: Janine Wolter Running for SPD in Neukölln - Janine Wolter steps up as SPD’s Neukölln mayoral candidate after Hikel’s exit

Janine Wolter is set to run for district mayor of Neukölln after Martin Hikel stepped aside. The SPD Neukölln executive board unanimously backed her as their candidate. Hikel, who had previously held the role, wished her success in the upcoming campaign.

Martin Hikel withdrew from the race after failing to secure enough support. His exit cleared the way for Wolter, who currently serves as district councillor for education, culture, and sports. SPD Neukölln’s co-chairs praised her as a dedicated and experienced politician with strong local ties.

The SPD aims to secure victory in the 2026 election with Wolter at the helm. Her campaign will centre on local issues like housing, schools, and public spaces. The party now prepares for the delegate vote later this month to finalise her candidacy.
