Janis Meisters named Latvia’s new Prosecutor General after tight vote

Janis Meisters has been appointed as the new Prosecutor General of Latvia, following a vote by the Judicial Council. Meisters, who currently serves as the Chief Prosecutor of the Riga District Prosecutor's Office, expressed satisfaction with his selection and outlined his priorities.

Misters was chosen in the third round of voting, receiving 11 votes 'for' and 4 'against'. His appointment still needs the final approval from the Saeima, Latvia's parliament. Meisters has served in various roles within the prosecutor's office since 2000, including stints as Chief Prosecutor of the Riga City Center District Prosecutor's Office and the Financial and Economic Crimes Investigation Prosecutor's Office.

In his new role, Meisters plans to focus on employee satisfaction, team unity, and societal security. He declined to comment on the Istanbul Convention, stating it is a political issue. This is not Meisters' first attempt at the position; he previously lost to Juris Stukāns in 2017. Meisters was reappointed as the Chief Prosecutor of the Riga District Prosecutor's Office in 2023, demonstrating his commitment and experience in the field.

Janis Meisters' appointment as Prosecutor General is a significant step in Latvia's legal system. With his extensive experience and clear priorities, he is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the role. The final decision lies with the Saeima, and the interest of different factions in meeting the proposed new Attorney General remains to be seen.
