JDU’s Gopal Agarwal flips Thakurganj in a nail-biting Bihar election
Thakurganj, a Muslim-majority constituency in Bihar, has been a political hotspot, traditionally favouring the Congress party. However, the recent trend shows a shift towards the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The constituency, comprising the Thakurganj block and parts of Dighalbank, has seen a close race among the top contenders.
The Thakurganj Assembly Constituency was established in 1951. Over the years, the Congress party has emerged as the most successful, winning eight out of the total elections held. However, the latest victory went to Gopal Kumar Agarwal of the Janata Dal United (JDU), who won the 2023 elections with a significant margin of 8,822 votes, securing a total of 85,243 votes.
The contest was mainly a three-horse race. Agarwal faced stiff competition from Saud Alam of the RJD, who received 60,036 votes, placing third. Saud Alam's party colleague, Saud Asrar, is currently the MLA of Thakurganj. Ghulam Hasnain finished second with 76,421 votes, narrowly missing out on the top spot.
The political landscape of Thakurganj continues to evolve, with the JDU securing the latest victory. Despite the shift, the RJD remains a strong contender, as evident in the close margin of the recent elections. The constituency's voters will likely play a crucial role in shaping Bihar's political future.
