Jeannette Simone Blanke named Osnabrück's new First City Councilor
On the recommendation of Lord Mayor Katharina Pötter, Osnabrück City Council elected Jeannette Simone Blanke as First City Councilor in a vote on Tuesday, March 17. Blanke, who will oversee the departments of education, culture, and family affairs, will assume her new role on November 1. At 52, she will succeed Wolfgang Beckermann, who is set to retire at the end of October.
Blanke currently works for the Lower Saxony County Association (Niedersächsischer Landkreistag e.V.) in Hanover, where she has served for the past five years as a deputy executive responsible for schools, culture, tourism, transportation, energy policy, and economic development. Prior to this, she held various positions in Hanover's municipal government since 1994, including leadership roles in facility management, economic development, and drainage infrastructure. She also worked in the office of then-Mayor Stephan Weil and later became office manager for his successor, Belit Onay.
The Osnabrück City Council appointed Blanke to the fixed-term position for eight years. The vacancy attracted 68 applications from both regional and national candidates.
