Jens Meifert to lead Kölnische Rundschau through bold restructuring

The Kölnische Rundschau has appointed Jens Meifert as its new leader to guide the newspaper through a major restructuring. The long-serving journalist will oversee changes while keeping the publication's distinct editorial voice intact. His promotion comes as the paper adapts to a shared newsroom model within the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger media group.

Jens Meifert has worked at the Kölnische Rundschau since 1998, shaping its local reporting for over two decades. A trained political scientist, he took charge of the Cologne city desk in 2021 and was named deputy editor-in-chief in May 2025. His leadership and award-winning journalism have earned praise from Gerald Selch, editor-in-chief of the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger Medien, who described Meifert as a key figure in the paper's future.

The restructuring will see the Kölnische Rundschau operate within the shared newsroom of the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger media group. Despite this integration, the paper will maintain its own journalistic brand and regional focus. The move aims to create efficiencies across editorial teams while reinforcing the Kölnische Rundschau's local identity.

Like many regional newspapers in Germany, the Kölnische Rundschau has faced declining readership over the past five years. It remains a major title in the Rhineland but competes with larger outlets, including its sister publication, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, and digital platforms. The media group, which also owns local advertising papers and radio stations, reaches 60 million online visitors monthly, making it one of Germany's most influential digital news providers.

Meifert's appointment marks a new phase for the Kölnische Rundschau as it balances tradition with modern challenges. The paper will continue as a standalone title but benefit from shared resources within the media group. The changes aim to secure its place in a competitive and evolving news landscape.
