Jet from the British Air Force Forced to Land Urgent at Kagoshima Airport

In an unexpected turn of events, a British F-35B Lightning stealth fighter jet from the Royal Navy carrier HMS Prince of Wales made an emergency landing at Kagoshima Airport in southwestern Japan on August 10, 2025. The aircraft landed safely without injury to the pilot, causing a brief closure of the runway and minor delays to commercial flights.

The emergency diversion was precautionary following the pilot reporting the issue to air traffic control in advance. The jet was part of the UK Carrier Strike Group operating in the Indo-Pacific region in joint exercises with Japanese and U.S. forces under Operation Highmast. The visit to Japan by the British Carrier Strike Group, which includes the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, is the first by a British aircraft carrier since World War II.

After landing, engineers from the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force assessed the jet. The aircraft remains at Kagoshima Airport awaiting spare parts for repair, with the exact nature of the technical fault undisclosed but confirmed as unrelated to a prior F-35B malfunction that stranded another jet in India earlier during the cruise. The supply chain for F-35 parts, a known challenge globally, is delaying the repair and return of the jet to its carrier group.

Despite the emergency landing, the incident did not disrupt the training mission of the British Carrier Strike Group. The closure of the runway affected the takeoffs and landings of six commercial flights, causing minor delays. However, no further incidents or delays were reported for the British Carrier Strike Group.

The Japanese government welcomed the British Carrier Strike Group's visit, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation. The emergency landing of the F-35B at Kagoshima Airport did not result in any injuries and did not disrupt the training mission of the British Carrier Strike Group, which is expected to leave Japan on Tuesday after completing its training mission and visit.

  1. The unexpected emergency landing of the F-35B Lightning stealth fighter jet in the aerospace industry has caused minor delays in the finance sector, as the supply chain for F-35 parts, a known challenge globally, is delaying the repair and return of the jet.
  2. In the sports world, the visit of the British Carrier Strike Group, including the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, to Japan is seen as a symbol of strong cooperation between the two countries, similar to a successful team working together towards a common goal.
