Job applications are already digital in many places - but mostly still without AI

Digital hiring practices are now standard in Germany, with nearly all companies accepting online job applications. A new survey by Bitkom reveals how businesses are adopting technology at every stage of recruitment—from interviews to contract signing.

Video interviews have become the norm, with two-thirds of firms using them to assess candidates. Almost half also rely on online tests or digital assessment centres to evaluate skills. Despite this shift, only a small fraction have turned to artificial intelligence for help.

Just 3% of companies use AI to analyse an applicant’s competence or potential. Even fewer—only 1%—employ AI tools to screen applications or conduct interviews. Chatbots are equally rare, with just 4% using them to answer questions from jobseekers. Digital contract signing remains limited, with only a quarter of businesses currently offering it. However, 46% plan to introduce the option in the future. Meanwhile, 88% of companies keep application materials in a pool for later review, ensuring candidates remain in consideration for future roles. A small but growing number of employers also provide digital trial work. Around 13% now let applicants test-drive a role before making a final hiring decision.

The survey highlights a clear trend: while digital tools dominate recruitment, AI adoption remains minimal. Most companies still prefer human-led processes for key decisions. However, interest in expanding digital options—particularly for contract signing—suggests further changes may lie ahead.
