Joby Aviation enlarges production facilities, introduces a fresh electric aircraft to its collection
Joby Aviation, a leading electric air taxi company, has significantly increased its production capacity with the expansion of its facilities in Marina, California, and Dayton, Ohio.
In Marina, California, the company's site has been doubled in size, now covering approximately 435,500 square feet. This expanded facility is expected to produce up to 24 aircraft per year, roughly equivalent to nearly one aircraft every other week once fully operational. The expanded site supports not only manufacturing but also federal certification, ground and flight testing, pilot training, and aircraft maintenance. The California expansion was supported by a $9.8 million grant from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and about $10 million in equipment cost savings from the State Treasurer’s Office.
The Dayton, Ohio facility, currently under construction, is designed to be a major scaled production site capable of manufacturing up to 500 eVTOL aircraft per year. This site will also handle component manufacturing and testing for pilot production aircraft and is a critical step toward FAA production certification.
Collaboration with Toyota is central to both sites' development, leveraging Toyota engineers' expertise to optimize production efficiency and quality. Toyota’s strategic investment has included at least $250 million toward Joby’s growth.
The expansion reflects Joby's commitment to scaling up its electric air taxi production in preparation for commercial launch, initially targeting Dubai in early 2026, with U.S. operations to follow. The addition of a sixth aircraft to Joby’s fleet, which earned airworthiness certification within a week of completion, signals progress toward commercial readiness.
Joby Aviation's manufacturing process incorporates modern technologies such as 3D printing and advanced data analytics to enhance production capabilities and ensure high quality. The company is vertically integrated, handling various aspects of its aircraft and air taxi service in-house.
This comprehensive expansion shows Joby Aviation is scaling production facilities strategically in both California and Ohio to meet ambitious future demand for its electric air taxis.
- The expansion of Joby Aviation's facility in Marina, California, is not only dedicated to manufacturing but also involves federal certification, ground and flight testing, pilot training, and aircraft maintenance, with the potential to produce up to 24 aircraft per year.
- The Dayton, Ohio facility, once constructed, will be a massive production site, capable of manufacturing up to 500 eVTOL aircraft annually, and will also handle component manufacturing and testing for pilot production aircraft.
- Joby Aviation's strategic partnership with Toyota, which includes a $250 million investment, plays a crucial role in the development of both California and Ohio facilities, utilizing Toyota engineers' expertise to optimize production efficiency and quality in the aerospace and technology-centric manufacturing industry.
