Johannes Bruckenberger reflects on his journey from APA to ORF leadership
Johannes Bruckenberger, the current Editor-in-Chief of ORF, has had an eventful career in Austrian journalism. He recently reflected on his journey, from his shift to APA in 1994 to his current role at ORF, which he took up in late 2023.
Bruckenberger began his career at Salzkammergut Zeitung before moving to APA in 1994. He held roles such as media editor and head of domestic politics there. He considers this move more significant than his later shift to ORF in 2023.
At ORF, Bruckenberger oversees a diverse range of responsibilities, divided into sections, short-form content, digital channels, and programs. He ensures no rigid separation exists between these areas. He receives calls from politicians, often seeking appearances on ZiB1 during election campaigns.
Bruckenberger maintains regular coordination with ORF Director General Roland Weißmann. Together, they strive for independent, objective, and equidistant journalism. Bruckenberger notes that he is contacted more frequently by ORF than he was by APA during his tenure as editor-in-chief there.
Bruckenberger's experience at APA and ORF has shaped his perspective on journalism. He values the size of the newsroom and the number of distribution channels at ORF, which differ significantly from APA. If faced with restructuring at ORF, Bruckenberger is open to exploring new opportunities and roles within or beyond the organization.
