Join CDU Geisa Land's 35-Year Reunification Hike on Oct 19
Join the Geisa Land branch of the CDU for a commemorative hike on October 19, 2025, marking 35 years since German reunification. The six-kilometer trek begins at 13:00 from 'Heile Schern' in Spahl and concludes at the youth club in Walkes, where refreshments await from 15:30 onwards.
The hike, open to the public with no registration required, will traverse through Apfelbach and pass the historic Seeleshof. Once home to the Heller family, they were forced to leave in 1974 due to the DDR border's expansion. A memorial stone stands as a reminder of its destruction since 1997.
Paul and Norbert, two individuals who escaped across the former inner-German border under dramatic circumstances, will share their stories during the hike. They will also discuss their return to their hometown of Walkes after reunification. Eyewitness Domkapitular Bruno Heller will recall the Seeleshof's destruction and its connection to Germany's division.
The hike, starting at 13:00 and ending around 15:30, will conclude with a social gathering at the youth club in Walkes. A shuttle service will be provided around 17:00 to transport hikers back to Spahl. The event is a poignant reminder of Germany's past and a celebration of its reunification.
