Jörg Eger takes helm of THW in Bremen and Lower Saxony amid rising challenges
Jörg Eger has been officially appointed as the new State Commissioner for the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) in the Bremen and Lower Saxony regional association. The installation ceremony took place on February 23, 2026, at the Niedersachsenhalle in Hanover, attended by around 250 guests from politics, emergency services, and government agencies.
Eger brings over 30 years of experience in THW, having most recently led a department in the Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland regional association. His operational background includes commanding the Rapid Deployment Unit for International Search and Rescue (SEEBA), a role that has prepared him for high-stakes emergency response.
The Bremen and Lower Saxony THW association is a key part of Germany's civil protection system. With 79 local branches and more than 12,000 volunteers, it maintains an operational readiness rate of 106 percent. During the ceremony, THW President Sabine Lackner stressed the organisation's reliability in uncertain times, stating, *'When the world is all about deals, you can still count on the THW.'* Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens highlighted the strong partnership between the state and THW. She pointed to their joint efforts in managing the winter floods of 2023/24 and Storm Elli as proof of their effective collaboration. In his first speech as State Commissioner, Eger promised, *'We will be ready when you need us,'* and vowed to deepen cooperation between full-time staff and volunteers.
Eger now leads one of Germany's largest THW regional associations, responsible for coordinating emergency response across Bremen and Lower Saxony. His appointment reinforces the organisation's commitment to civil protection, both at home and in international missions.
