He takes over the 'Tagesthemen' moderation job - Jörg Schönenborn leaves WDR leadership to join Tagesthemen in 2026

Jörg Schönenborn, a veteran broadcaster with four decades at WDR, is set to join Tagesthemen as a presenter from mid-2026. His move comes as he steps down from his role as WDR's director of programming to focus on strengthening political reporting for Das Erste and its digital platforms.

Colleagues have praised his long-standing commitment to credible journalism, with ARD and NDR leaders highlighting his impact on public broadcasting.

Schönenborn's career at WDR began over 40 years ago. He started as a radio editor before becoming the North Rhine-Westphalia correspondent and later editor-in-chief of WDR Television. His experience spans multiple leadership roles, shaping the broadcaster's output over decades.

As director of programming, he has emphasised balanced reporting that helps audiences form their own opinions. This approach has earned him recognition, including praise from NDR Director-General Hendrik Lünenborg, who called him 'a major asset' for ARD and its viewers. His departure from WDR's executive team will leave a notable gap, according to Director-General Katrin Vernau. At *Tagesthemen*, he will work alongside Ingo Zamperoni and Jessy Wellmer as a co-presenter. ARD Chairman Florian Hager described him as a steadfast advocate for high-quality journalism, reinforcing his reputation as a trusted figure in German media. While no specific data on changes in *Das Erste*'s political coverage under his leadership exists, his new role is expected to bolster its editorial direction.

Schönenborn's transition to Tagesthemen marks a shift from management to frontline presentation. He will begin his new position in mid-2026, focusing on political reporting across Das Erste's television and online services. His extensive background and leadership experience will shape the programme's future direction.
