Jörg Schönenborn leaves WDR to anchor ARD's Tagesthemen in 2026

Jörg Schönenborn, a veteran journalist with 40 years of experience, is joining Tagesthemen as its new anchor. His move to ARD marks a significant shift from his long-standing role at WDR. Both broadcasters have acknowledged the impact of his transition on German public media.

Schönenborn's appointment was announced in March 2026 and will take effect in mid-2026. Known for his credible and analytical approach, he will not only present Tagesthemen but also expand his work in digital engagement. His new responsibilities include explaining ARD's journalistic processes to audiences across online platforms.

Over his career, Schönenborn has held key positions at WDR and ARD, including head of television news and director of programming. He has also been a central figure in election-night coverage for more than 25 years. His departure is seen as a loss for WDR, while ARD gains a respected voice in its push for deeper reporting.

Hendrik Lünenborg, NDR's director-general, welcomed Schönenborn's addition to the team. Meanwhile, Katrin Vernau, WDR's director-general, described the move as a gain for ARD but a setback for her own organisation. ARD's focus on in-depth journalism comes as it seeks to counter online disinformation and propaganda.

Schönenborn's arrival strengthens Tagesthemen with his decades of experience in political and analytical reporting. His expanded role in digital communication reflects ARD's strategy to engage audiences more directly. The changes will take full effect when he officially begins in mid-2026.
