JSW Energy secures rail deal to tighten grip on coal logistics
JSW Energy has taken another step in expanding its coal-based operations. The company has now secured approval from creditors to acquire Raigarh Champa Rail Infrastructure, a key player in coal transportation. This follows its earlier purchase of KSK Mahanadi Power Company Ltd (KMPCL) for Rs 16,084 crore through insolvency proceedings.
JSW Energy already holds a significant indirect stake in Raigarh Champa Rail Infrastructure. The firm provides essential rail infrastructure for transporting coal to KMPCL, a power plant acquired by JSW Energy in 2023.
The creditors’ approval allows JSW Energy to proceed with the debt-laden company’s takeover. However, the deal still requires clearance from the National Company Law Tribunal. Once finalised, the transaction is expected to close by December 2025.
The acquisition will strengthen JSW Energy’s control over coal logistics for its power operations. With KMPCL already under its ownership, the company is consolidating its supply chain. The final approval from the tribunal remains the last regulatory hurdle.
