K C Tyagi quits JD(U) after 23 years, hints at BJP alliance

K C Tyagi, a long-serving advisor and former Rajya Sabha MP, has resigned from the Janata Dal (United) after over two decades with the party. His departure follows years of declining influence, particularly after his removal as national spokesperson more than a year ago. Despite this, he has maintained personal respect for party leader Nitish Kumar.

Tyagi joined the JD (U) in 2003 when it merged with the Samata Party. Over time, his role within the party diminished, especially after losing his position as spokesperson. The JD (U) had repeatedly distanced itself from his public statements in recent years.

His exit was formalised on Tuesday when he chose not to renew his membership. Reports now suggest he will support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after leaving the JD (U) on 23 March 2026. Tyagi, known as a long-time BJP sympathiser and critic of the JD (U) leadership, is expected to attend a key meeting on 22 March 2026 to discuss the country's political landscape. Despite his political shift, Tyagi has clarified that his personal regard for Nitish Kumar remains intact.

Tyagi's move marks the end of a 23-year association with the JD (U). His decision to back the BJP could reshape political alliances in the region. The upcoming meeting on 22 March may provide further clarity on his future role.
