Kansas City's small businesses rehearse for 2026 World Cup spotlight at Union Station
A small business showcase took place at Union Station on Wednesday, giving Kansas City entrepreneurs a chance to present their companies. The event acted as a rehearsal for local firms aiming to gain visibility before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Organisers moved the date forward to avoid clashing with the tournament's expected busy period in June.
The KC Chamber Candidates Showcase brought together founders from across the metro area. While exact numbers of participants and industries represented remain undisclosed, the event highlighted the creativity and determination of local small businesses.
Casie Murff, owner of The BeVel Barber Lounge, spoke about the value of connecting with fellow entrepreneurs and community members. His barbershop has expanded through grants, including support from the BeyGOOD Foundation, and partnerships like one with Vine Street Brewing Co. The business is also branching into fashion through a collaboration with Kansas City Fashion Week.
Kathryn McCormick, co-founder of Klā Sanctuary, explained how the wellness studio has grown since opening eight months ago. The showcase provided a platform to introduce its services to a wider audience. Meanwhile, Keisha Jordan, founder of Complex Flavors Home + Life, plans to grow her home decor line ahead of the World Cup's global spotlight.
Participants at the event are now in the running for several awards. These include the Emerging Business Award, Legacy of Kansas City Chiefs Award, and Small Business Equity Award. Finalists for the Small Business of the Year title will be named on April 2, with winners announced on May 27.
The showcase aimed to prepare local businesses for increased attention during the 2026 World Cup. Awards and recognition will follow in the coming months, giving selected companies further opportunities to stand out. The event reinforced the city's support for small enterprises ahead of a major international tournament.
