Kansas Guard Member Arrested for Trying to Export US Military Radio to Russia
A Kansas National Guard member, Canyon Anthony Amarys, has been arrested for attempting to export a US military helicopter radio to Russia. The FBI Kansas City field office is leading the investigation, with assistance from other agencies.
Amarys, 35, was indicted for attempting to violate the Export Control Reform Act. He agreed to photograph a military installation at Fort Riley and acquire the communications equipment for Russia. The FBI recovered the radio during a court-authorized search.
Amarys bought the helicopter radio in March 2025, intending to export it to Russia via a contact in Romania. He signed a one-page agreement confirming his covert relationship with a Russian intelligence service. The Export Control Reform Act bars the unlicensed export of such defense-related items. Amarys was arrested on October 28 and made an initial appearance in federal court in the District of Kansas.
Amarys faces federal charges related to attempted unlawful export, which can result in significant prison time and fines. The investigation is ongoing, led by the FBI Kansas City field office with assistance from other agencies. The public is reminded that the export of certain military equipment is strictly controlled to prevent misuse.
