Rosenheim Cops Star Reveals Family Drama: Mother Gambled Away All Her Money and Ended Up in Prison

Karin Thaler opens up about toxic family ties and ageing in Hollywood

A Rosenheim Cops actress has opened up about the devastating consequences of her mother's gambling addiction, a crisis that ultimately led to a prison sentence.

Munich – Since the show's first season, Karin Thaler (60) has been a core member of the cast of Rosenheim Cops, the beloved ZDF crime series. She plays Marie Hofer, the sister of the original lead commissioner, Korbinian Hofer (Joseph Hannesschläger, †57).

To fans, Thaler is an indispensable part of the long-running ZDF show. Over her career, she has also appeared in well-known TV productions like The Black Forest Clinic, The Dream Ship, and Hubert and Staller. But behind the scenes, the actress has endured deep personal struggles—her mother was severely addicted to gambling.

At first, Thaler had no idea how far her mother's addiction had gone. "She told us she used slot machines to drown out the tinnitus that had started tormenting her in her early fifties," Thaler revealed in an interview with Bunte. "I didn't take it seriously at first—I had no idea what a terrible spiral she was trapped in." To pay off her mother's debts, the Rosenheim Cops star worked herself to exhaustion.

Then, in 1993, came the breaking point: Thaler's mother was sent to prison after blackmailing a supermarket. "She demanded five million marks, threatening to tell the press there was poison in the cottage cheese she always bought there," the actress, who was born in Deggendorf, disclosed. Her mother was convicted of theft and attempted extortion, receiving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Despite everything, Thaler stood by her. Looking back, she describes their relationship as toxic and codependent.

Professionally, too, the actress has faced challenges in recent years. Apart from her role in Rosenheim Cops, she says she has received hardly any new offers since turning 60. "I'm grateful I'm still part of the show, but since then, no new roles have come my way. It's really noticeable," she lamented in an interview with Ippen.Media.
