Kassel’s peaceful protests draw thousands against rightward political shift
Thousands gathered in Kassel’s city centre on Saturday for multiple demonstrations, all of which passed off without incident. The largest event, titled Against the Rightward Shift, For Human Rights, drew far more attendees than expected—around 7,000 instead of the predicted 300.
The main demonstration began at Friedrichsplatz, winding through Altmarkt, Stern plaza, and Königsstraße before returning to its starting point. By around 3:00 PM, participants had regrouped at Friedrichsplatz for a closing rally, which concluded roughly half an hour later.
The demonstrations in Kassel ended without any reported disturbances. Police measures ensured minimal traffic delays, while organisers and participants adhered to planned routes and timings. The day’s events highlighted a range of social and political concerns in the city.
