Kathy Valcke, champion of Rheinfelden-Mouscron unity, dies at home
Kathy Valcke, a driving force behind the twin-city partnership between Rheinfelden (Baden) and Mouscron, has died. Her decades of work strengthened ties between the two communities, leaving a lasting mark on cross-border cooperation. Leaders in both cities have paid tribute to her dedication and warmth.
Valcke served for many years as a city councillor in Mouscron, where she became deeply involved in the friendship with Rheinfelden. From 2014 to 2020, she took a leading role in shaping the partnership, supporting projects that brought citizens together. Her efforts focused on fostering exchanges and mutual understanding between the two regions.
Mayor Klaus Eberhardt of Rheinfelden highlighted her personal connection to the city. He described her as someone whose commitment and kindness would always be remembered. Even after stepping down from her council role, Valcke continued to champion European unity through local initiatives. Until two years ago, she also served as president of the Centre for Public Social Welfare in Mouscron. Throughout her career, she worked closely with friendship associations in both cities, ensuring the partnership remained active and meaningful.
Valcke's death leaves a gap in the long-standing bond between Rheinfelden and Mouscron. Her work over the years helped build a foundation for ongoing cooperation and cultural exchange. The two cities now honour her legacy as a bridge between their communities.
