Kazakh Deputy Calls for Transparency in Foreign-Backed Media Content
Deputy Sergei Ponomaev of the AMANAT faction has raised concerns about the lack of transparency in paid content promoting foreign interests in Kazakhstan's media space. He has sent an official query to the government regarding this issue.
Paid content, often representing foreign interests, is being published on many domestic media portals, Telegram channels, and social media pages without clear labeling as advertising. This has raised concerns about the responsibility, patriotism, and ethics of bloggers and information resource owners receiving such funding.
Deputy Ponomaev believes mandatory labeling of such materials is necessary in the field of information policy. He argues that the lack of transparency is distorting citizens' perception of information, particularly in politics. While there is no specific information about U.S.-funded media in Kazakhstan, the U.S. government does support various media initiatives globally through organizations like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Doubts also remain about the legality of these commercial orders and the payment of taxes on foreign funding.
Deputy Ponomaev's query highlights the need for transparency in paid content promoting foreign interests in Kazakhstan's media space. Mandatory labeling could help ensure citizens are informed about the source of the information they consume, promoting a more balanced and accurate perception of political and social issues.
