Kazakh tradition celebrates newborns at a sanctuary for struggling mothers

A traditional Kazakh celebration, Qyrqynan shygaru, was recently held at the Mother’s Home, a public foundation supporting women and children in difficult circumstances. The event honoured a newborn baby girl and was joined by renowned artist Svetlana Aitbayeva. The Mother’s Home project focuses on keeping families together and reducing the number of children sent to orphanages. It provides shelter, guidance, and practical help to women under 35, usually those with one child, though each case is assessed individually. During their stay, mothers and their children live in small, cottage-style homes designed for nine to ten residents. The foundation offers comprehensive support to women who might otherwise feel forced to give up their babies, aiming to ensure that every child can grow up within a family. The recent celebration highlighted the Mother’s Home’s mission, bringing attention to the cultural and emotional significance of family bonds. The event in Astana underscored the Mother’s Home’s ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable families, creating stable environments for mothers and children through housing, personalised assistance, and community events like Qyrqynan shygaru. No external funding sources for the project have been publicly identified.
