Kazakhstan and China enhance aerial links through a new accord
In a significant move to bolster their aviation sector, Kazakhstan and China have expanded their cooperation in 2025. The expansion was formalised at a meeting held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, under the Civil Aviation Cooperation Working Group in the Central Asia-China (C5+1) framework [1][2][3][4].
The meeting resulted in a memorandum of understanding that aims to broaden the route network and strengthen bilateral air connectivity between the two countries. This agreement has led to an increase in the total number of permitted weekly flights between Kazakhstan and China to 124 flights per week[1][2][3][4].
Kazakhstan's carriers have gained access to a new Chinese destination, Yining (Kulja), located in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang. Further discussions are ongoing about flights to Kashgar (Kashi)[1][2][3][4].
Several new routes have been launched by Kazakh airline SCAT. From Shymkent, flights now operate to Shanghai, Xi’an, and Urumqi, each with twice-weekly service, opening on May 29, July 2, and July 4, 2025, respectively [1][2][3][4].
China Eastern Airlines also entered the Kazakh market in July, introducing thrice-weekly flights between Almaty and Guangzhou [1][2][3][4].
The cooperation extends beyond passenger routes, with discussions focusing on cargo flights and developing air hubs. This move reinforces Kazakhstan's strategic geographical position and boosts its presence in global air transport [1][2][3][4][5].
Another notable milestone is the first arrival of the Chinese-manufactured COMAC C909 aircraft in Kazakhstan. The flight operated the Urumqi–Karaganda–Urumqi route on August 13, 2025, symbolizing the strengthening technical and operational ties between the two countries [1][3][4].
The authorisation of the fifth freedom of the air has also been granted, allowing both countries' designated carriers to operate flights beyond their own territories between the two countries. This expands operational flexibility further [1][3].
The commitment from both Kazakhstan and China is aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries and reaffirming their commitment to continuing constructive dialogue and joint initiatives to develop the aviation sector.
